Colors at Pehal




Colours signify the beauty of life, for they depict the richness of each and every thing around us.

So today was a day devoted to celebrate the joy of colours and art with the children of Pehal.
The competition started at around 2:00 PM and the basic aim was to let the imaginations of those tiny tots run riot, to give them a chance to explore and bring to life the things which they have always thought about but never got a chance to really bring to life. The end result was lovely. From fruits to flowers to cycles to children playing in the field to beautiful designs, we saw it all!

The zest with which the children responded to such an activity was heart warming to say the least. The best part was that they were all well behaved and well disciplined for which the credit goes to our teacher.

After half an hour, their sheets were collected and the best drawings are to be awarded.

So here we are, taking one more step towards building the confidence of these children and this is just the beginning.

A Volunteer moment

Its International volunteers day today!


A day where we applaud on every effort of those who volunteer for a cause. Pehal team is no less proud of the dedicated efforts of its volunteers in bringing about awareness and contributing to the society.


As Gandhi, once mentioned, "Whatever you do may be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it"


The fact that for any issue existing in the society where we dwell, if we arent being a wave breaking against a cliff to bring it down, we for the least, are being like a tide, moving widely against a coast, slowly shaping it by moving grains of sand, bit by bit. so, Oh yes, we are making a difference! We are a being part of a change, a positive change, To make a change (I quote Aamir khan)' We have to stop thinking of out own individual gain and loss and do what is honest, true and right and think collective. It calls for personal sacrifice in this time of chaos but from chaos will emerge clarity....even if we don't manage to achieve this for ourselves we will achieve it for our children'


With this encouragement, and a pat on the back for everything and all the change a person working on behalf of others without being motivated by financial or material gain and hence, increasing 'quality of life' is bringing about, this post ends with a little poem, originally written in Italian.




In my mind the face of a child

its eyes lost to the horizon

a life without future.
A woman with no way of feeding
her child that she holds close to her
but without hope.
The hands of a man asking for bread
and the pain of a hunger that gives no
rest.
I feel the misery, the suffering
and the cry for help
which perturbs my nights and gives
me no peace
Peace, the world still needs Peace.
I feel the indifference of people,
who have abandoned these people.
The desolation of this land
that my steps now walk on.
How can one still remain passive
before this outcry?
How can one close his eyes
before so much pain?
I have chosen
I have chosen not to ignore
I have chosen to be a Volunteer
to put my life to the service of others.
To leave my own land, to leave everything,
To go where there is more need for
me
Living to help others, to give joy or
even only a smile
to help others, It is the most beautiful
thing in the world,
there is no doubt
It does not cost anything, you cannot
sell it, you cannot buy it
It is free, you can give it without expecting
to be rewarded
This is the essence of a Volunteer
But what pushes me to do all this?
The smile of a child who plays
thoughtlessly
The joy of a mother who can nurse
her little one
The happiness of a father who can
work and still believe in a future.
Happiness, thanks to my action
This is the reward that one can have
I am happy and proud
I have chosen to face reality,
although uncomfortable, and to react
I am proud to be a Volunteer.

Project Pehal - A formal perspective

PEHAL is an initiative based in Shalimar Bagh, New Delhi. We provide non -formal education to a group of children who belong to the families of the construction workers currently involved in a construction project taking place in the location. A small room in one of the semi constructed buildings in the site is made into a classroom, where a properly trained teacher, gives them basic education essential for survival.
In addition to basic knowledge, we provide to them skill building classes, where painting and dancing sessions are held once a week. These are aimed towards empowering them and making them self dependent and no less than other children who would make it to future India.
These children, however, have been observed to be weak in terms of health and presence of basic warm clothing. We now aim towards providing them with warm clothing, and hold health, dental and nutrition camps for them.
Our journey with the kids of pehal has just initiated and we dream to make this beginning a successful one with Pehal change makers.
